One in a hundred

We went out for a day trip with Renee, Brianna, Mike, Thomas, Kym and Caroline. Swimming, snorkeling, fishing and lunch was on the menu. We lucked out, I think it was the nicest day all year.

We met at the jetty at about 10am and we were greeted by a large water snake named Fred.

It is winter here in Fiji so Fred was trying to warm up before his days excursions.

We headed out to a clear and calm morning. Our first stop is what used to be a sand bar until the storms last year flattened it. The water around it is crystal clear with a sandy bottom.

We like our swimming holes with sandy bottoms not ourselves.

The water here is always this color. In the image you can see where the sand bar used to be. This time last year it was over 20ft high and had drift wood on it as well as picnicers from the resorts. Never the less it is still a great swimming hole.

It also made for a good place to work on ones tan.

Next up was a bit of trolling while we moved to our next destination. The lines were set and the course was laid, now it is time to break up the monotony of trolling with a bit of fun.

First comes out the blue zinc oxide that is used to completely block out the sun and also great fun when goofing around.

At first it was just the kids but then it turned into everyone onboard wearing blue lips.

We trolled for awhile and had a couple of strikes but nothing stayed on.

As time was moving quickly we had to pull in the lines and get to the next spot, as they wanted to try a bit of popping.

We arrived at the popping spot and I set up a drift. Within seconds the first GT was on and Renee was having the fight of her life.

Notice the lovely blue lips and a nice GT.

Not more that a few minutes and the second GT was hooked up. This time it was Thomas's turn to have the fight of his life.

A nice dark GT and of course blue lips.

Unfortunately time had run out and we had to make a lunch appointment. So the rods were stowed and off we went.

A bit more swimming and some fish tales later we wrapped up an awesome day.

I like to call this day a one in a hundred. For every hundred days on the water one is this good.

Trolling at it's best

After much bad weather and a vacation to Sydney, Australia, I'm back.

The weather has shaped up well for the week and we decided to try to fill the freezer with eating fish. That means trolling, and I really do not like trolling, but it can be the best way to catch wahoo and mahimahi.

So, off we go into the wild blue sea, trolling. I think I will let the video speak for me.

Comments: The morning of the 25th produced good results with Bubby Richey landing 1 bass over 10 pounds and most boats having good results on senkos and flukes... The afternoon of the 25th was very slow as the bass fishing seem to shut off until right before dark.

Bass fishing on Baccarac overall the last 4 days was very good: Mike Wilson from Tulsa commented that it was his best trip ever to Mexico with 1 bass over 10, 3 over 9, 4 largemouth over 8 and countless 6 and 7 lb black bass...Greg Riggle reported excellent results and the Richey group had 2 bass over 10 and were in the fish all day long.........Baccarac is red hot.

Comments: Sorry there haven't been any reports for a few days. The fishing at Lake Baccarac is very strong but as firsthand knowledge tells me, the bass being caught are much bigger three or four days before the full moon. With top water bass fishing starting three or days before the full moon, excellent in the afternoon session. But Sixto showed us how to catch the big ones with four largemouth over 10 lbs. caught in a two-day period leading up to the full moon. The day after the full moon, not only did the number slow, but the size decreased. German and his boat had the same results, catching the big bass on wacky style senkos, Carolina rigged. Vic Henry reported catching 70 to 80 fish a day before the full moon and his numbers dropped to half of that three days after the full moon. In the last nine days, eleven largemouth bass over 10 lbs. were caught on Lake Baccarac.

One in a hundred

Topwater Bite is Hot at Lake Baccarac

Comments: The freezing weather we experienced last week, as a side note, destroyed almost 100,000 acres of crops in the area. It might have been the best thing, however, that could have happened on Lake Baccarac. The water temperature dropped almost eight degrees and did shut the fishing off for a day or two, but the top water bite has returned and we are experiencing phenomenal numbers of largemouth bass up to seven and eight pounds. Steve Gilcrease reported a couple of twelve plus pounders on top water as well. I do think the big bass will be hard to find until the water warms back up, but I think this exciting action will continue. In the past, Baccarac bass have always liked Zara Spooks, anything with more of a stealthy presentation but Pop'Rs and Buzz Baits are definitely the top water bait of choice this week. There is a chance that the lakes in Sinaloa will be drawn down rapidly as the farmers try to replant after this recent destruction. Only time will tell what their plan will be. Lake Baccarac is alive and well and we hope to see you at Lake Baccarac Lodge soon!

Feb. 7th - Excellent action of 4 to 8 pound bass. Randy Bolton reporting best overall trip ever to any Mexican bass fishing lake and Lodge. Topwater bass fishing is very very good right now.

After the storm with Yuki

After way too much bad weather, tsunami warning one weekend, cyclone Tomas the next and then blowing at 30knots with driving rain, we finally got out for a fish. Not the greatest weather, but it was fishable none the less.

We went out with Yuki again and he brought two friends, Jose, who has been out with us and Hanochin, who has never fished before.

First order of business is to teach Hanochin how to fish.

Lucky he was a fast learner and was casting like a pro in no time.

Yuki is a seasoned pro so he just moved out to the bow and started casting away.

The same goes for Jose who is quite the angler. It is not long before he has a nice Bluefin in the boat.

The sea is a bit rough with an Easterly blowing and a Southerly swell. A bit lumpy to say the least.

Yuki has a few strikes but they are missed. He finally gets a solid strike and hook up. The fight is on but it is not acting like a GT. Soon the question is answered. A Bronze Whaler shark.

Needless to say this fish did not make it on board for a photo session. It was released in good shape if only for a sore nose.

The shark was followed by a massive strike that led to Yuki losing his popper and leader.

After a quick change of gear he finally hooked a GT.

The GT gave a good accounting of itself and was eventually boated in good shape. After the photo session it was released.

Unfortunately the bite time was rather short as we are upon the full moon and bad weather. Things slowed down from there and only a small Bluefin Trevally was landed in the last hour. That is not to say we did not have a few laughs with the giant sunglasses we keep on board.

Our time was short together but we had a good time and made the most of rather tough fishing. Yuki is a great guy to fish with and he knows what he is doing. That always makes things a bit easier.

I am sure we will fish together again.
