Looking Back At The Special Places We Fish

An Angling Wish List for 2012

Every year that we fish is a good year. It’s tough to be cynical about any year that offers quality angling. Still, there’s always that missed fish, missed hatch, or squandered angling opportunity. Any fly fisher who spends a minute on piscatorial reflection will uncover missed angling opportunities from the past year. In my fishy [...]

Boxing day or better yet Fishing day

'Twas the day after Christmas and in all of the sea, not a ripple was seen, not even a swell. The sky was blue and the tides were right, we had no excuses, it was time for a fish fight.
We loaded the boat with rods and reels, nothing was left but to take hold the wheel.
Off we went like a bat out of hell, the fish were hungry we could tell.
From Boxing day 2011
Ok enough Xmas rhymes, time for some fishing porn.
First thing you will notice is there are no pictures of me. My back is still messed up and I tried to cast a stick bait but the pain was a little to much for this old fisherman. So with that being said, this is the view the Captain sees most of the day.
From Boxing day 2011
Yep, that's it, other people fishing and the sounder/GPS.
In case you are wondering, the round object on the left is a green coconut. (Just one of the many benefits of living in the tropics). It has been husked and put on ice so that the Captain has something refreshing to drink and stays happy even though he can't fish. The yellow water tight Pelican case holds the phones and ID's. The bulging at the top of the image is a life jacket pocket that is held up with a bungee cord, easy access.
Ok now you see what I did all day let's get into some fish.
First up was a very unlucky Barracuda. I say unlucky because here in Fiji we eat them and they taste great. So you know it went to the ice box first aid station.
From Boxing day 2011
The next patient for the first aid station was a lovely Bluefin Trevally.
From Boxing day 2011
Things got a bit quiet after the Bluefin, so off we went to a spot that has almost never let us down. The current was ripping around some bommies and there was a little bit of chop on the surface. Perfect for a GT to be hanging out in the eddies waiting for unsuspecting prey.
Rosie fished like a machine, she was unrelenting in her casts. As she scanned the surface of the water, pinpointing the next cast to a position that should hold fish.
Finally after a good long, hard slog, she was rewarded. The strike was hard and fast. The predator was dark in color and came from nowhere. It crashed the popper with an almighty splash. Once the hooks were set the fight was on. Line melted from the Stella as if there was no drag. Of course the drag was preset to 8kg or 17+lbs. Once the fish was off the bommie it was time to bring it home.
From Boxing day 2011
It was Rosies first Black GT. Short, fat, shaped like a barrel. Tough as nails and refused to smile for the camera. I swear he gave us the fin when we let him go.
Next up was the smaller cousin of grumpy. Yet he still put up a good fight. There was no coming in easy with this one either.
From Boxing day 2011
Now you would think that by now Rosie had had enough. Oh no, not even close. So what does she do? Adds one more to the list and just to be different, this one is small and full of piss and vinegar. It puts up a hell of a fight and even when it was in the boat it still fought and struggled. In fact we almost did not get a photo as the small GT tried to make a flying leap out of Rosie's arms into the water. Alas I was quick with the camera and here is the photo to prove it.
From Boxing day 2011
The hour was getting late and we called it a day. Rosie of course a little worse for wear.

Lake El Salto - October Bass Fishing Report from Anglers Inn

El Salto Bass

October Bass Fishing Report from Anglers Inn Lake El Salto

Comments:

The fishing season has arrived at beautiful Lake El Salto, Mexico. Anglers Inn has already been entertaining beginning and veteran bass anglers from around the world. Anglers are reporting anywhere from 50 to 70 fish per day with plenty of quality fish in the mix. ?We have had many anglers report catches of 7 to 9 pound bass,? said Billy Chapman, Jr. ?The water levels are a little low for this time of year, which is good for fishing in general. This year is already turning out to be a great one for Anglers Inn.

Jim Huson, Fayetteville, Ark., native threw a wacky-rigged Senko, Watermelon Lizard and Rattle Traps to anchor nearly 70 fish by himself in one day. The Anglers Inn International veteran has had close to 25 trips and wouldn?t change a thing. ?I always feel safe with Anglers Inn International,? said Huson. ?We are treated great, we catch fish and safety is no concern. That is exactly why I choose Anglers Inn International. They do it like only Billy Chapman, Jr. can. It is perfect. I will keep coming back as long as I can.?

The hot baits for El Salto during the fall to winter months continue to be 8-inch Zoon Lizards, 5-6 inch Senkos, black and blue Skinny Dipper-style swimbaits, crankbaits (Citrus Shad color) and Rat-L-Traps. Not to mention, the topwater bite is starting to turn on . When it comes to technique and Lake El Salto anything goes, and it doesn?t matter if you are a seasoned angler or weekend angler. Everyone is at home with Anglers Inn International. The guides are tuned into the fish and can point anglers in the right direction. Anglers Inn is introducing a fall special for any level angler. The fall specials will save anglers money and they get an extra half-day of fishing included bringing the stay up to 5nights/4 days of fishing. American Airlines will now be offering flights from Dallas directly to Mazatlan so anglers looking for a quick route now have another option. The fall special is good from October 6 until December 22, 2011.

Our staff is widely known to be the best and at Anglers Inn we pride ourselves on our service. We want any angler or non-angler to come enjoy the great amenities that we have to offer. I guarantee that you will enjoy your stay with our famed staff, excellent accommodations and the greatest bass fishing on the planet.

Lake Baccarac 2012 Bass Fishing Report

Baccarac Bass Fishing

Date: January 5th, 2012

Name: Lake Baccarac, Mexico

Hottest Baits: senkos, 1 oz spinnerbaits, topwater yellow magic

Hottest Colors: watermelon red senko and swimbaits, ratl traps, power worms

Date Fished: January, 2012

Comments: Topwater bass fishing produced fish over 10 pounds this Morning...more details soon.

The bass fishing from the previous two weeks was slow. The last four days offered only average results, boating 30 ? 70 largemouth a day up to 7 lbs. Our Japanese clients, fishing predominantly top water, enjoyed their trip because 90% of their catches were on top water. The senko bite, spinner bait on top water offered the best results.

The mornings have been cool but the afternoons have certainly heated up. The water temperature on Lake Baccarac will start warming from this point on.

The water level, similar to all lakes on the Western side of Mexico, is lower than we would like to see it. Baccarac is currently around 30% capacity, with only about nine or ten percent useful water remaining for irrigation and electricity. We have seen these levels three times in the last ten years.

Lake El Salto, Mexico Bass Fishing Report from Anglers Inn

January Bass Fishing Report from Anglers Inn on Lake El Salto, Mexico

El Salto

This season has been very exciting and appears to be improving daily! The fishing has been extraordinary for the sheer numbers of fish caught and overall trip experience! Captain Mike Lackey, owner of the Vagabond, (a long range Sportfisher out of San Diego) had a group of 16 Industry friends who come down every December and May said it best, when asked what baits were the most productive, he said ?whatever you want to throw was the best bait because you caught fish on almost everything in your tackle box and a lot of them?! They all agreed that this was one of the best bass fishing trips they had ever experienced. Mike went on to say that a couple boats of his anglers who were hard core crank bait fishermen had a session that produced 30 bass in the 6-8 pound range! (Fat Free Shad in the Citrus and Baby Bass pattern was the ticket).

Mike Ishikawa (who has a fish counter) fished with Bob Fletcher (1st timer) the past President of Sportfishing Association of California (SAC) and he said their best day was 182 bass up to 7 & Pounds. The topwater fishing has been excellent with some anglers reporting up to 50 bass per boat on Pop ?R?s, Sammy?s, Rico?s and Yo-Zuri Sashimi series. It seems that if you want topwater action, it is on! The go-to color for soft plastics is Watermelon (red flake) in both 8? Zoom Lizards or 6? Senkos (wacky rigged was the preference). Swim Baits (Storm and Money Minnows) worked well as did Jerk Baits and Rat L Traps. It did not seem to matter what color as long as you threw it and retrieved it! The only thing that matters is to be here and enjoy this fantastic fishing which has been generating 100+ bass/ boat/day. My recommendation is come on down! By the way, everyone loves our new custom Tracker Bass Boats. They are the most fisherman friendly boats in Mexico!

As for the Amazon, the water level is receding, the Peacock Bass are out of the jungle and the bite is on! I will report back via email and short video clips with updates. You will find a link on this report to a recent article written and posted by Stan Fagerstrom, the world famous, ?Master Caster?. When you read Stan?s article you will understand my pride and appreciation. All of us at Anglers Inn International say, thank you Stan! Any success we have is the team doing it the ?Anglers Inn Way?. We still have some openings for Anglers Inn Amazon. I invite you to come and experience the revolutionary Fly-In, Floating Suites and peacock bass fishing at its best. We fish beyond natural barriers where the river boats can?t go in Government & Indian Reserves.

You should consider adding on a couple of days to your bass fishing trip to experience the in-shore and off-shore, saltwater fishing with Anglers Inn Off shore from our private VIP dock in the Marina Mazatlan. You can count on the same quality boats, equipment and service that are rendered at our bass fishing resorts in Mexico and Anglers Inn Amazon in Brazil. The entire fall season has been prolific from mahi-mahi (also known as dorado) in September, yellowfin tuna, sailfish & stripped marlin in October ? December.

The fishing for jack crevalle & rooster fishing has been excellent and we expect it to continue through March. In addition, we have had good results bottom fishing for red snapper, white sea bass (corvina), grouper and trigger fish. Whether you go off-shore for the pelagic species or fish artificial baits for jacks, roosters and groupers we have a plan! Book your saltwater days and we will adjust your trip to maximize your fishing experience. Our bass anglers have enjoyed casting to schools of feeding jacks (5 to 25 pounds) on our light tackle rigs. The fact that you are within swimming distance from the hotels that line the beaches in Mazatlan it makes an action packed and picturesque outing on the Mexican Riviera. Anglers Inn Lake El Salto

Lake Baccarac - Mexico Bass Fishing Update

Trophy Bass

Date: October 18th, 2011

Name: Lake Baccarac

Hottest Baits: senkos, spinnerbaits

Hottest Colors: watermelon, shad

Date Fished: October, 2011

Comments: Spinnerbait bite is on....two more Lake Baccarac bass over 10 pounds caught yesterday on 1 oz spinnerbaits. Fishing has slowed from the last report, with our clients catching from 30 - 60 bass per boat in the 8 lb. range. Senkos and swim baits worked the best for the recent group. We did have a beautiful 13.3 largemouth bass caught which will be posted on the website very soon, caught on a spinner bait. Spinner baits also produced many of the bigger fish for Narlin and his small group from Sinaloa de Leyva. Lake Baccarac is still at 35% and the next group will be arriving shortly.

"Blowing dog's off chain's" or "Making the best of a windy situation"

The weather, what can you say? It is what it is and I should be glad I am not cold. That being said, it has been blowing for a week and a half, non stop. My friend Brendan likes to say, "blowing dogs off chains", very appropriate.
We decided to skip work and go for a fish, after all, we own the business and it has been so long since we fished I needed to see if I still knew how.
We headed out at 7:00 on the nose. The water was rather calm and as I throttled up, I was thinking, this is gonna be good.
I wanted to try some new spots and since it was so calm I figured why not.
We headed East, got out side the reef and was met by a ferocious swell and a wind that was picking up. After about 5 minutes of running into this I decided to stop the boat and see just how rough it was. After all popper fishing involves standing while casting and retrieving.
It became very obvious that that was not going to happen out here. The boat was being tossed around like it was in a washing machine.
A quick change of plans and we headed back West to some familiar grounds that are fishable in wind and swell.
We finally arrived to the new spot and wasted no time in wetting our lines. Unfortunately there was no one there to bite.
We fished until the low tide then made the decision to move. Another 20 minute ride and we are at the new location. The tide is moving again and then the bite comes on.
First up is Loren, he catches his first GT on his new rod and reel.
Rosie moves in to leader and land the fish.
This is one happy camper.
Next up, Rosie lands a Red Bass. Too bad they are poisoned.
By now it is getting really rough outside of the reef so we decide to make a move inside and switch to lighter tackle, 30lb.
First up is Loren again and he catches a whopper of a fish, a Leather Jacket.
We manage to catch a few Bluefin Trevally's, the take home and eat size. Then Rosie hooks onto a large Red Bass that tries to pull her rod into the water. After a good fight she is smiling and the Bass is photographed and released.
This is then followed by Loren getting smoked on some 8lb tackle. But it gave us all a good laugh.
Then in the worst possible location, with wind, tide and current all working in opposite directions, Rosie hooks up to a GT on her 30lb. Normally we would be fishing for GT's with 50-80lb tackle but not this time. A hell of a fight ensues and after nearly 8 minutes the fish is boated and Rosie is smiling again if not a little worse for wear.
Here is a short video of the fight.
That finished us off for the day. Until next time.

Better late than never for Nick's second trip

Ok, so I am a little late on this post. Ok, a lot late, but hey, I've been busy. Yeah that's it, busy. Doing what I'm not sure but it sounds good. Actually sometimes there just isn't enough hours in the day and sometimes I am just plain lazy/tired by the time I get home. Oh yeah and my mother came over to Fiji and we took a little fishing vacation, but that's the next post.
So any ways here we go, our last trip out with our good friend Nick from Marine Graphics Ink.
It was a beauty of a day, a little breeze and a little swell. We headed out to some new reefs that we sighted many moons ago. These particular reefs looked extremely fishy but if there is any wind or a big swell fishing them would be next to impossible as they are wide open to the SouthEast, the general direction of both win and swell.
We head out with visions of grandeur and bait breath.
It does not take long before the first fish is in the boat.
A Red Bass for Nick and excitement starts to build for a cracker day fishing.
From fishing with Nick 2 2011
Not to long to wait and Rosie brings one in also.
From fishing with Nick 2 2011
Now with everyone all excited and fired up you know what the inevitable is, the fish shut down.
All quiet.
Not even a look.
Soon the rhythm of casting takes over and it is time to put in the hard yards. I am not sure how long we went with out a bite but it was a while. As both warriors were starting to feel the weight of the big lures and the strain of keeping ones balance on a rocking boat.
Finally Nick gets another Red Bass to the boat.
From fishing with Nick 2 2011
Has the spell been broken?
Not just yet. It takes a bit more work and then Nick land a small Emperor.
From fishing with Nick 2 2011
At this point there is still excitement and high anticipation for our target fish.
Remember, these little fish are nice and all, but what we are after is in another class altogether. We are hunting Giant Trevally, pound for pound they are arguably the hardest fighting fish in the sea. And we have yet to catch one.
Back to casting.
Soon a little Bluefin Trevally is at hand.
Now at this point Nick has been using the same popper the whole time. It is a red and white Williamson Jet 07. And I might add he has gotten a little cocky with this particular color as it has been working quite well for him.
That is until he casts it onto the reef and it gets stuck.
Bye Bye popper.
Now he has to change poppers and readjust his popping style, as each popper works differently. Does this slow him down? Noooooooo he then goes on to hook a nice GT right on a group of bommies. The fight is on and as I move the boat into position Nick puts the hurt on the fish. This one is a better fish and it is fighting for it's life.
That is the beauty of GT's, they never give up until they hit the surface. They fight with every once of their strength. Alas freedom would only come once it's picture was taken with Nick.
From fishing with Nick 2 2011
We fished on after this, but it was a case of lock jaw and nothing else was landed.
I still think these are fishy grounds but need to work them a bit more.

Has the spell been broken?
Not just yet. It takes a bit more work and then Nick land a small Emperor.

We fished on after this, but it was a case of lock jaw and nothing else was landed.
I still think these are fishy grounds but need to work them a bit more.

Tight lines
