Fly Fishing Annoucements and Events:: Next Year's Jam Location !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The announcement below is currently being discussed at this thread in the General Forum:

http://www.paflyfish.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=16669&forum=2

Dear PAFF Message Board Community

The location for the 2011 Annual PAFF Fly Fishing Jamboree has been selected. The gathering will be held at Seven Mountains Camground, located about 16 miles east of State College, PA. The campground is right off of 322 on the eastbound side just as it expands to 4 lanes about 1.5 miles east of its junction with Rte 144 south of Centre Hall, PA.

Tradition has established Central PA as the ideal location for the Annual Jamboree. With the growth of the board, finding a suitable campground is becoming a bit more difficult. This year we found two very good options, Seven Mountains and Quiet Oaks CG in the Renovo, PA vicinity. The choice was not easy. We would like to see a "mini-Jam" organized for the north-central area of the state and encourage anyone disappointed that we won't be moving up there this year to organize a secondary Jamboree, hopefully for a different weekend.

Seven Mountains is easily accessible. It opens up fishing locations farther south and also leaves easy and convenient access to Spring/Penns/Fishing Creek, the "big three" of prior Central PA Jams. The campground is uniformly flat and intends to have a significant amount of under-roof accomodations on site by Spring. Alternative accomodations are plentiful nearby, such as State College motels within 20 minutes, or other local campgrounds. We hope to see anyone who plans to have more than a couple beers in the evening stay with us at Seven Mountains. They have plenty of room for tent campers, but we recommend reserving tent space early as well to be sure everyone can be accomodated. Arrangements for campsites and cabins are between YOU and the CG and no one associated with PAFF takes any responsibility for your reservation.

Presently available are 6 "primitive cabins" for Friday and Saturday nights. I did not inquire about longer reservations before and after, but feel free to discuss this with the CG owners/agents. Reservations of cabins and tenting space is between you and the CG. They have agreed not to rent the 6 available primitive cabins to anyone not identifying themselves as being with the PA Flyfish Jamboree through close of business on January 5, 2011. All reservations are first-come, first served and a deposit will be expected from the CG to "hold" the reservation beyond January 5. One of the primitive cabins exists and the other 5 are supposed to be built before we arrive. Please discuss this contingency with the CG if you reserve one of the not-yet-built cabins.

We have secured the CG pavilion for use of the group from 3:00 PM Friday, May 20 through 12:00 noon Sunday, May 22. As is our habit, the pavilion will be the location where attendees can gather to meet up with others in the AM for coffee and after dark for a campfire and social gathering. Attendees can also use the pavilion for temporary shelter, tying flies, repairing equipment, meeting fishing groups and eating a meal or two. The pavilion is significantly smaller than the one last year, but it will serve our purposes similarly, if more compactly. There is a charge for use of the pavilion and we'll need to make arrangements like last year to raise a little money among us to pay for it.

Fly Tying:: fly tying for beginners
when I first started to tie I was having trouble with the thread breaking I thought it was the bobbin but was told it was being cut by the hook. I didnt believe it till I slowed down the bobbin winding and did find out it was being cut by the hook point. I am not saying thats your case but its something to check out. Also Sandfly has a very good boxed asst of wet fly dubbing with a variety of perfectly dyed dubbing for what works well in Pa. streams

Window of opportunity

The wind has finally lessened and the weather is a little calmer. It seems like forever since I have been out on the water but really only about two weeks.
Friends just in from America, Katie, and some from Australia, Nick and Becky. So the weather is good and we must fish.
From Nick, Becky, Katie
Believe it or not this is a really calm day compared to what we have been experiencing.
Nick being artistically lit by the flash.

Becky getting into the action.

It was not long before the fish were on the chew. Once the tides are right it seems everything comes together all at the same time. There is this window that opens up and if you are there and fishing you will catch fish. Only problem is when the window closes that's it, the bite shuts down and anything after that is pure chance and a lot of work.
I try to fish that window by being about 1 1/2 hours before right through to 1 1/2 hours after. Seems to work and here is some proof that I am not just blowing chop.

From Nick, Becky, Katie
Nice Bass, too bad they are poison.

From Nick, Becky, Katie

From Nick, Becky, Katie
Not really sure what this is. If you know let me know.

From Nick, Becky, Katie
A nice GT and rather long.

From Nick, Becky, Katie
Katie with a nice GT caught on 30lb. She has now discovered that they can pull and put up a real fight.
These are not trout, they are bad ass fish that will give you a work out.
The total for the day was 7 fish in the boat in 4 1/2 hours. All of them caught in that little window when everything is just right.
By the time we called it a day the wind had started up and so had the seas. Everyone settled down for the trip back with stories to tell and sore muscles.

Fly Fishing Tackle: Hardy Swift TE Fly Reel Review

Here in the UK, we’re genuinely bestowed with more than enough locations for fishermen to fish. Whether or not it’s a windy beach or a hushed stream in the countryside, fishermen are certain to find a place that’s both enjoyable and difficult. As for me, I delight in fishing in a desolate location, specifically fly [...]

Soft plastics with a bit of popper thrown in

Some times one just needs to try new things in order to break out of a mold.
Rosie and I have been popper fishing for quite awhile now. As you know we love it and do alright in the fish category. The problem is, a lot of the better eating fish are found a little deeper in the water column. Therefore one must try a new style of fishing to get down were the tasty fish live.
So the plan is set to do a bit of deep water soft plastic jigging. Now I have read heaps, watched loads of videos and talked to everyone I know who does this type of fishing. I did not want to fail at this.
We head out of the break water to a flat sea with high hopes and new ideas.
From Soft plastic jigging
The first few spots and drifts produce nothing. We do however encounter a pod of spinner dolphins mucking around. Unfortunately for you all we are we too engrossed in fishing to shoot any photos of them.
We then move to an area that has a lot of small reefs in the 20 to 30mt range.
Jackpot!
Right away we find the fish and I work out the technique for catching them.
From Soft plastic jigging
A close up of this beautiful fish.
From Soft plastic jigging
Now that I have figured this out the fish start to come in with every drop of the jig.
From Soft plastic jigging
Now Charlie is getting in on the action.
From Soft plastic jigging
And then Rosie hooks up.
From Soft plastic jigging
Now young cousin Marky has figured it out and he starts to catch fish.
From Soft plastic jigging
From Soft plastic jigging
We continue to catch these cods and trouts for awhile. Then Rosie gets bored with all this jigging and she starts popping.
Tossing around her popper on 30lb gear while surrounded by coral reefs that just beg to break you off.
Of course she is going to hook up. And it is going to be a big fish that takes every trick we know to extract it from the depths.
From Soft plastic jigging
Once we have settled down after Rosies GT the wind starts to really kick. It is getting rough but we fish on.
Of course Rosie is still throwing a popper with her 30lb gear and wouldn't you know it she hooks up to a really big fish this time.
I jump behind the wheel and the chase/fight is on. At first she thought it was foul hooked by the way the fish was fighting, but it turns out it was just a big GT. After a prolonged battle due to fish size and weather conditions we finally boat a big, fat and pregnant GT. We move quickly to minimize out of water time and snap a few pictures. Then with great fanfare she swims away strong.
From Soft plastic jigging
It has now become so rough that we are having trouble standing in the boat without hanging on. That is the sure sign to head for home.
Ice chest full of great eating fish and Rosie with sore arms.
A success by any measure.

Fishing for weather

I find it amazing how much the weather dominates what we do. In this day and age when we humans have been to the moon and back, seed clouds for rain and snow, damn rivers and hold back the oceans, yet when the weather is crappy we are stuck inside. Sure there are those that venture out into it with protective gear and rod in hand, but for what? The love of fishing, or just because.....? It's wet, cold and darn right miserable.
As I type this it is raining, no it is pouring and it is so loud that it is the only thing I can hear. If I were to go outside I would literally be soaked in seconds. As you know I live in the tropics so rain gear is really out of the question. I would sweat to death and then end up wetter than if I did not wear anything.
Ok you get the point that weather does play a major role in my/our fishing times and lives.
So it came to be, Yuki wants to go fishing again on Sunday. We make the plans to meet at 7:30 at the boat.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday all have fine weather. In fact the weather is so fine I start thinking Sunday is going to be fine. What a fool I am.
I wake up around 4:30 to the sound of wind and driving rain. I better text Yuki and see what he thinks. Not surprising he says we go. As my Australian friends would say, "fair dinkum". We go.
As Yuki, Jose and Imaken (Kanto) arrive at the boat the sky actually starts to clear up and for a brief moment I feel that the fish gods are smiling at us. Yeah right, dream on.
We head out with high expectations and visions of Giant Trevally.
As we clear the river mouth the first thing I notice is a Southerly swell and a NE wind. Not what the doctor ordered.
It does not take us long to arrive at our starting point and the first casts are made in no time.
With in minutes Yuki is hooked up to a nice GT. After a classic Yuki fight where he almost gets pulled out of the boat, he weighs maybe 60kg, the GT is boated.
From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
Now before I go on I must first stress how much respect Rosie and I have for these fish. I refuse to let anyone kill one and do everything in my power to return them in good condition from whence they came.
This next image is Yuki and myself performing a bit of hook removal surgery. Notice the blue saltwater hose in the mouth. I had to remove the hooks from the popper to get them out. Luckily the gills were not hooked and only minor bleeding that was stopped by the time I released it.
From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
Now for the grip and grin shot. I just love this guy.
From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
It went quiet for a little after that firecracker start.
The weather then started to act up. With the wind kicking up to 25knots and rain squalls blowing through, it's amazing we even caught another fish.
Here is a shot of Yuki and Jose doing the popping thing.
From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
Here is a close up of Yuki in action.
From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
Next up is a nice Red Bass that put up a good fight. Notice the size of the swell behind Yuki, and how rough it is.
From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
This is Kanto with a classic action shot.
From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
Kanto had a bit of a rough go in the beginning. He was hooked up to a giant and could not really handle it. He was a bit overwhelmed by the shear power of the GT. Unfortunately he lost the fish but not the lure.
Good for him he persisted and never gave up. He eventually hooked a very large Unicorn fish, albeit in the ass, but a fish is a fish.
From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
Yuki, not to be out done, lands a nice Bluefin Trevally.

From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
Another Red Bass and a Bluefin Trevally were boated. Unfortunately no more GT's were to be seen this day. All said 6 fish were boated and there was four misses. Not to bad for a half day out. We all had a good time and made plans for another trip.
From Yuki and friends April 18 2010
