Anglers Inn Lake El Salto Bass Fishing Report

All Anglers Inn properties in Mexico experienced record low temperatures. Mazatlan, El Salto and Mateos recorded lows in the low 30s for the months of January and February, but that didn?t stop the action.
The usual numbers weren?t there in those months, but anglers were reporting solid numbers with big bass being caught. Warmer temperatures bring better fishing. This month, the bite has been picking up in a big way. The springtime bite has busted on the scene at all Mexico locations, giving anglers a reason once again to flock to Anglers Inn.
The hot baits from both El Salto and Mateos are 8-inch Zoom Lizards, 5-6 inch Senkos, 4? and 5? swimbaits, crankbaits and Rat L Traps. The ever-popular Black/Blue 10-inch worms are always working this time of year. In short, this means that whatever technique anglers want to use works to catch big bass on El Salto and Mateos.
Jimmy Murata, TV host from Japan has fish El Salto many times and hit it big this month taking a 12 + on a deep diving crank bait. Congratulations, Jimmy! All of us at Anglers Inn are praying for our Japanese friends and wish them well. Hard core anglers aren?t the only people visiting Anglers Inn International in Mexico: Mark and Kim Owens have been visiting El Salto for seven years now, and every single year the couple enjoys the bass catching as well as the world class service. Mark?s testimony tells the entire story:
?Our first morning out on the water, I mentioned to our guide, that we wanted to fish for that monster bass. The Boss said that we may not catch very many fish, but you might get that big fish that my wife was looking for. I told him Kim was just looking for that 10-pound fish of a lifetime. We were on the water at gray light and he was off to his Honey Hole, and it was game on. We had a 9-4, 7-10, 7-4, 6-8, two 6-0, and a few 5?s and 4?s. The fishing was up and down, but we expected this. I think the cold front had the bass in a suspended pattern. We stuck with our game plan and it paid off big time. I stuck a 9-10, but it hit like a freight train. The guide insisted that Kim and I keep at it because there was big fish there. Sure enough, Kim set the hook on her dream fish and the fight was on. She handled that monster like a pro, and glided it to the net. The fish weighed in, a straight up 10-0. She went crazy. She had that school kid smile that was priceless. Kim and I had a wonderful stay visiting with all of the Anglers Inn staff, and the fishing was awesome as always.? ?Kim?s 10 pounder came on a Carolina rigged 8?Zoom Lizard (watermelon/red flake), but the ten-inch Black/Blue Tail Power Worms were good, too. Our most productive bait was a Storm 5?, Wildeye Swimbait (shad pattern) and the Money Minnow.?
Anglers Inn at Lake El Salto is a great couples retreat. This is what Elaine and Vernon Merrifield from Colorado have to say about their recent trip: ?Elaine and I just returned from some good fishing and relaxation at your lodge, Anglers Inn. We only fished in the mornings thus freeing up our afternoons for massages, reading and resting. Hate to admit it but she really put it on me. She landed two giant bass each over 8 pounds. I weighed them myself. She also beat me in numbers during both morning sessions. We were using watermelon lizards with a chartreuse tail. The guide rigged these Texas style and Carolina style. It seemed to us that the Carolina style was the most productive. I also used the old stand-by Bill Dance crank bait successfully. As always the watermelon, 6 inch Senkos worked early in the morning. The guide rigged them "wacky style" The last morning she beat me 29-12. I'm not use to that kind of treatment. Our guide seem to really enjoy the butt kicking I was getting. As always the staff was fabulous and I'm sure we each gained a few pounds during our stay. Thanks again for a wonderful holiday. We will return soon. Vernon Merrifield.

Updates from the past few weeks
Sorry it has been so long since a post. No real excuse, just lazy and not a lot to report.
The weather has been, well not great to say the least.
Rosie and I took Yuki out for a Sunday fish. With him was Ken and Captain. Captain is an F15 fighter pilot with the Japanese air force.
The weather was atrocious and the fish were in hiding, but we persevered.
A side note, our usual camera is in the shop so we are shooting all the pictures with an Iphone or a GoPro camera. Not the best quality.
Anyways here is a couple of shots of our trip.

Not one of our better days but that's fishing, right?
Unfortunately the wind kicked up and it started to white cap, that's 7-10 knots. A little hard to use the light gear.
Soon after my bass Rosie hooks up to a nice GT and has it boat side in no time.
After that it goes quiet and the wind has picked up some more. Time for lunch and a bit of fun.

So the next time out it was just Rosie and me. After a short run in some horrid waves and rain squalls with wind gusts up to 30knots, the throttle cable played up and sent us home without a fish.
So this Sunday we decided to try again. The weather was looking lovely and our excitement was high.
Boat loaded, Billy on board with Spam and egg sandwiches, off we go into the wild blue yonder.
Our first stop was a small bay that has produced some nice Coral Trout and Mangrove Jacks. Light tackle was the call for the morning. By that I mean 30lb gear.

We moved out of the bay to another area that is known to produce some nice fish. I am still using the 30lb but Rosie has switched to the 50lb. Now you must be wondering what happened to Billy, he has this deal with the fish, He wont eat them and they wont eat him. Therefore he does not fish. Good for me as I can teach him to drive the boat and I get to do a little fishing.
I finally catch a nice Red Bass on the light gear, what fun.

Billy does one for his wife Katie who is out of the country but loves fishing and knows he doesn't.
After lunch we decide to go and have a swim at a sand bar. To our surprise the sand bar was gone, flattened out during the hurricanes this last season. Lucky for us the waters around it are still like a swimming pool.
After our swim we are gonna try a bit of trolling in a proven location. So out go the lures and off we go. Within 20 minutes the ride is too rough and the lures will not stay in the water. We all agree to pull them in and head for home. Easier said then done. It's gotten really rough and the swell has picked up. After almost two hours we finally get back to the dock.
We still had a great day on the water and it sure beats the crap out of being at work.
On a side note I mentioned the GoPro cameras. I have purchased two of them and have started to see what they can do.

To film or not to film? That is the question.
We set out with the intention of filming some how to videos. How to tie a bimini, how to cast big poppers etc. Unfortunately our camera man brought his new fishing pole and wanted to give it a try. And who am I to say no you can not fish?
But as usual that was just a teaser. Within 5 minutes the wind was blowing 20 knots and the chop had picked up. We headed to a sheltered bay to do a bit of filming. Brendan (the videographer) grabbed his new 15 lb rod and reel and proceeded to cast a small popper to the shallow reefs surrounding us.
The Trevally had him doing circles around the boat. I knew at that very instant that he would not be filming on this day. After a good fight by both angler and fish, the angler was victorious. A nice 4kg trevally.
Now this next picture of the same fish, only a close up, is for a reason. It is the last time Brendan's popper was ever seen.
Very soon after a giant cod or Red bass engulfed the popper, split ring, and swivel in one smooth, explosive move. It bit right though the twisted double leader. Of course Brendan was devistated. I felt his pain for exactly one second, then I realized he would be buying another from my shop. I know, I'm a little bit evil.
Followed by another Trevally.
Look closely at Rosie's popper because it is no more. Taken in the same unceremonious way as Brendan's. A big rampaging something that was unstoppable.
After lunch it was the captains turn to catch a fish, no matter how small.
On our way home we tucked into a small sheltered bay again and Brendan proceeded to catch a few small Trevally's and a baby Goatfish.
After that we pounded our way into the wind and chop to make it home before dark.
As we left the river mouth it looked to be a cracker of a day.

So it was to be, that Brendan was now sporting a grin that would not soon go away.
We then moved out to a bit deeper reef system which of course means a bit larger fish. Time to switch to the 30 lb gear. Of course just to make his point clear that he had no intentions on filming, Brendan went on to catch a very nice 6 kg Bluefin Trevally.
