May Bass Fishing at Anglers Inn on Lake El Salto
May was incredible at Anglers Inn International and Lake El Salto, Mexico. Although this fishing season has been inconsistent due to the abundance of bait, there wasn?t a single angler that came off the water wishing he was sitting on his couch dreaming about the next day of work. Instead, glowing reviews and tales of giant fish flooded the banks of Lake El Salto. The good news for anglers sitting on the couch dreaming of big bass is June and July will be better than May. Numbers were soaring all though the month, and the typical angler would boat 55-70 fish per day. A variety of baits would work, but crankbaits tend to rule the day.
Ryan Bostian, native of Southern California, threw a Rapala DT 10 crankbait to anchor several giants, including one 9-pound bass. ?This place is amazing,? said Ryan. ?We caught a bunch of 4-6 pound bass with shallow running crankbaits, and when that bite shut off we went to Rat-L-Traps when the wind started to whip. Make sure you bring the big hooks and a big appetite for big bass because this is epic.?
The hot baits for El Salto during the spring to summer months are 8-inch Zoom Lizards, 5-6 inch Senkos, black and blue Skinny Dipper-style swimbaits, crankbaits (Citrus Shad color) and Rat-L-Traps.
When June and July roll around we tend to see bass concentrated together around heavy cover. The ever-popular Black/Blue 10-inch worms are always working this time of year, and swim jigs begin to become a popular bite. When it comes to technique and Lake El Salto anything goes, and it doesn?t matter if you are a seasoned angler or weekend angler. Everyone is at home with Anglers Inn International. Fishing with the Powalski's
A little late on this post, but here it is non the less.
Once the fish is in the boat I tell Loren that I am done for awhile as I want him and Dollye to catch fish.
Not a big fish but on the light tackle they sure are fun.
Unfortunately the wind has whipped up and is now blowing 25knots with a very lumpy sea. This of course makes casting and standing very difficult.
It was promising to be a cracker of a day. Hardly any clouds and and no wind.
We got the boat loaded and met up with Loren and Dollye at the jetty. They are good friends of ours and own a real estate company called Harbour Property Services, check them out if you want to stay or buy in Fiji.
I gave the safety talk and off we go.
Both Loren and Dollye have fished quite a lot back in Seattle, but Salmon fishing is not the same as popper fishing for tropical pelagics. Loren has done a bit of fishing here with a few different people, but Dollye has not, enter the learning curve.
Unfortunately the learning curve is steep and long. I can teach you how to cast, I can teach you how to pop, but catching fish is something that takes a long time to work out.
Dollye took to it like a pro, casting and popping right away. Loren did not need any assistance.
After 20 or 30 minutes with no bites Loren wants me to cast a bit and tells me to catch a fish. So not being one to shrug of a challenge I cast out a few times and hook a little Trevally.

Now it is Loren's turn to catch a fish. After a couple of missed bites he finally hooks one and gets to feel the pull of the Trevally.

Meanwhile Dollye is still casting and popping and starting to work out the formula. She gets a couple of good bites but is not able to set the hooks. Like I said, a long, steep curve.
Back to Loren who is quite fired up at this point and hooks a nice Bluefin Trevally. He has learned to put the hurt on these fish otherwise the fish dictates the fight and you lose.
He has the fish boat side in no time and Rosie leaders it in. Cheers and high fives all around.

This is my first report from the Brazilian Amazon and our Fly-In Floating Suites. The first group that experienced the Floating Suites had a great time and 8 anglers caught 2500 peacock bass in 6 & � days of fishing. Think about it, this is 50 fish per angler per day! They loved the ?Floating Suites Experience!
We just hosted Keith Kaneko of ?Angling on the Fly?, who is Anglers Inn International?s official fly-fishing specialist. Keith and his customers were mightily impressed with our shallow draft, exclusive operation. We continuingly moved and positioned the Water Train and Floating Suites to maximize the shallow water that was perfect for fly - fishing and topwater action. The group averaged 60-70 peacocks/ boat/day up to 17 pounds. They even had 100+ fish days.

To film or not to film? That is the question.
We set out with the intention of filming some how to videos. How to tie a bimini, how to cast big poppers etc. Unfortunately our camera man brought his new fishing pole and wanted to give it a try. And who am I to say no you can not fish?
But as usual that was just a teaser. Within 5 minutes the wind was blowing 20 knots and the chop had picked up. We headed to a sheltered bay to do a bit of filming. Brendan (the videographer) grabbed his new 15 lb rod and reel and proceeded to cast a small popper to the shallow reefs surrounding us.
The Trevally had him doing circles around the boat. I knew at that very instant that he would not be filming on this day. After a good fight by both angler and fish, the angler was victorious. A nice 4kg trevally.
Now this next picture of the same fish, only a close up, is for a reason. It is the last time Brendan's popper was ever seen.
Very soon after a giant cod or Red bass engulfed the popper, split ring, and swivel in one smooth, explosive move. It bit right though the twisted double leader. Of course Brendan was devistated. I felt his pain for exactly one second, then I realized he would be buying another from my shop. I know, I'm a little bit evil.
Followed by another Trevally.
Look closely at Rosie's popper because it is no more. Taken in the same unceremonious way as Brendan's. A big rampaging something that was unstoppable.
After lunch it was the captains turn to catch a fish, no matter how small.
On our way home we tucked into a small sheltered bay again and Brendan proceeded to catch a few small Trevally's and a baby Goatfish.
After that we pounded our way into the wind and chop to make it home before dark.
As we left the river mouth it looked to be a cracker of a day.

So it was to be, that Brendan was now sporting a grin that would not soon go away.
We then moved out to a bit deeper reef system which of course means a bit larger fish. Time to switch to the 30 lb gear. Of course just to make his point clear that he had no intentions on filming, Brendan went on to catch a very nice 6 kg Bluefin Trevally.

Comments: - The first part of April started off with a bang at Baccarac and it has improved every day. Not only the swim bait bite, but the top water bite as well. Just received an e-mail from Marty Cooper who caught over 300 bass, 140 on topwater, a 10.5, a 9.3. and a 9.1, 25 largemouthbass over 8 lbs. and forty over 6 lbs. He ended his report by saying that in the last eleven years he has fished all of the Mexican bass lakes and none compare to Lake Baccarac.
James Meeks, who was fishing two weeks ago at Lake Baccarac, flew back to Chicago, gathered up a group and headed back to the lake yesterday. He has been fishing Mexican lakes for years and claims none compare to Lake Baccarac.
We had a lodge full of Japanese bass anglers, which the majority only fished top water. All reported it was the best fishing experience they have ever had and got photos and videos to prove it.
